The Impact of Music on Students Essay -- Research Essays Music Musical

The Impact of Music on Students In some way, melody affects everyone. Whether it is, a young girl?s favorite song on the radio, a college student?s escape from reality or a form of entertainment to a married couple, music brings everyone together. Music by all odds affects the lifestyles of heap in many different ways. The diverse styles of music makes people look and act differently. Music has many different levels. To me, levels meaning the more independent and reform-minded the music is, the more the fans take it to the extreme. Music creates style. It causes people to maunder, act, and dress the way they do. I hope to discover how much music influences people, especially college students. Also, the more mesmerized they are the more influences it has to them. I would like to prove, that to some, music is nothing more than the pop song playing on the radio in the car, and to others, it is a major(ip) part of their life. It is very interesting to me, to l earn the effects music has toward people. Music impacts everyone in some way (positive or negative), but I think it impacts college students the most. I would like to know the reasons people are listening to music they buy. Also, the reasons certain groups are more popular than others. I used a couple several(a) methods of research to conduct my research. I wrote up ten surveys with some questions about gender, age, what they buy, do they attend concerts, and do they support local music. I passed these surveys out to all told random students so there was no imbalance of the results. I hope to find out certain things like are males affected more than females from music who buys more clothing/ accessories is local music importa... ... time last week, at a little place in Oakland.? We were talking about how they are definitely one of his favorites, if he had to pick. I asked him why he was so into music. He replied ?It?s a stress reliever. It takes my mind off school, work, and people?s pettiness.? another(prenominal) interview that I performed was not as formal. This one was with my dad at the dinner table. It was pretty short and to the point. I asked him if he likes music. He said ? no? I then asked him if he ever listens to it and he said ?No, when I am in the car I listen to the news or talk radio and when I?m home I?m either working or watching TV.? After doing this research, I realized that by doing interviews you stinker really feel the emotion from the answers compared to reading a survey. I think that interviews did help me make certain things easier to understand on the survey.

Love Your Enemies :: English Literature Essays

Love Your EnemiesJesus said, You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth. But now I signalise you do not take revenge on person who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let them slap your left cheek too love your enemies and demand for those who persecute you.Is it possible to follow this teaching of Jesus today? The answer is yes, conveying this teaching is possible. There are still some people who do live in this dash. One person who lived this way was Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi was a man of peace from India. By no means did Gandhi resort to violence. Gandhi showed that the powerless had power. He never fought back instead he would sit and pray. Gandhi always wanted equality and peace among everyone. If someone were harm in any way, he would have never eddyed and hurt them. Instead he would have prayed or just ambled away. Although with his courageous words and actions he was a very powerful person he still could not control the decisions and actions of others. Gandhi once said,I have no strength, save what God gives me. I have no authority over my sylvan men, save the purely moral. Like many of our brave and peaceful leaders Gandhi was also assassinated. He died on January 30, 1948. Everyone should be more like Gandhi. Everyone should be mannequin and peaceful and then the world may be an easier place to live in. Its not an easy way to live because you often act or even speak before you act. Several people often do things without thinking. Its human nature. For example if person A were to clout person B, person B would automatically strike back. This is unquestionably not what Jesus would do. There is only very few people who would actually just turn the other cheek or walk away. Instead everyone else would probably do the same or even worse than what the other person did.Another way we can follow this philosophy is by, as Jesus said, Do unto others as you would have done unto you. Think about this, no one would want someone to harm them, emotionally or physically, and the other person probably feels the same way. Verbal abuse, talking about others, judging others also part of this. This damages others, and its hard not to do this because everybody does it but just because everybody does doesnt make it right.

Is College Worth it Essay

What is a College Degree Worth? by Maggie Gallagher. The overall main idea of this article is that the cost of college is going up and people is taking loans bulge out which are putting them in debt because they have to pay them off. That is the reason why some people dont go to college, I believe the compose wrote the article to inform you about why teens are in debt after they graduate college. According to Mrs. Gallagher the main reason why college debt is increasing isbecause loans are easy and teenagers are encouraged to borrow money. At least 700 colleges have contract with bad banks to market credit cards to students. About nine in 10 students use credit cards to help pay for their college expenses. The main reason why the increase in college debt is because colleges have taught teenagers bad financial decisions, which has caused the decrease in the worth of a college degrees. The degree Im pursuing at this moment is my Bachelors degree in Culinary Arts. I insufficiency a b etter education other than a high school diploma. Me wanting to become a chef/ Pastry chef, there is nothing Flint nor nautical mile for my degree. I want to be up there with the people on the Food network channel and the TLC channel as well. With me having more degrees it allow most likely guarantee me a VERY nice job in the near future.

Notes on Jaws Essay

Characters in the filmChrissie, the graduation exercise victim is different to everyone else because she almost deserved the attack because it was her own fault. She was drunk at a party and almost to have sex with a random guy who she didnt even know the name of. The sond was ringing which indicated the fact that there was something in the piddle- evidently a shark. Subsequently, because she was drunk she could not hear this and the boy was to focused on running over to Chrissie that he was also oblivious to the important indication. Alex is a young boy with an older mother who says just 10 more minutes for him staying in the water, if she had not said that and not let him go, he would still be alive.contrasting two extremes, a large, meaty lady walked past Alex on the opening scene straight away it strikes you how skinny Alex looks. Speilberg has done this so you think wherefore was Alex eaten? when there were better people the shark could of picked. Another contrast demonstrat ed by Speilberg was that Alexs mother was shouting Alex, Alex, Alex. She knew who her son was, very well, yet the first attack the boy who was the only one who could have potentially saved the victim had to ask for her name. This illustrates how different the two attacks were.False/Fake alertnesssScreaming makes you alert and suddenly aware of what is happening. Another technique Speilberg uses to catch your attention. There are a few fake attacks/alerts which have been proposed in the film of Jaws. Firstly, just in the beginning the first attack a girl in messing around in the water initially we think it has something to do with the shark and so does chief Brody. only we are wrong, by using this technique is builds the audiences expectations and then confounding what we expect with the reality.By doing so this makes us more aware that something is nearly to happen and makes us more excited for the real attack that is soon going to creep up on us. Another example of a chimerical alarm is the Sunday lunch attack, when the two men are attempting to catch the shark. The strong shark pulls a tyre which is connected to the breakwater (the trap) and it breaks the jetty causing the two men to fall in. Although, one of the men is dragged across towards the shark, in shock and realization he scrambles away towards land. Luckily, he gets out of the water just in time. But, we- the audience- believe that he is going to die because there is the shark music playing.

Prison and Facilities Offering Rehabilitation Essay

Prisoner Rehabilitation is when a criminal offender has been amend of their criminal behavior. Many correctional facilities bid several different types of replacement programs to the offenders that are housed within the facility unfortunately with many states seeing budget cuts these types of rehabilitation programs are being cut. With the amount of facilities offering rehabilitation programs are dwindling and the amount of prisoners increasing this could lead to major problems in the future. Prisoner rehabilitation is a way to try and ensure that upon the offenders release that society is safe from the offenders criminal ways. Some correctional facilities offer rehabilitation programs like medicate and alcohol rehab, religion, and anger management and that is just a few (Foster, 2006).First discussed back in the Twentieth Century although it is countd to of been used before than. Rehabilitation has never been the soul reason for the incarceration of a person. Prison official we re not able to give a defined and clear method of rehabilitation (Foster, 2006). scientific penology was a major role in defining and conducting structured thoughts and scientific studies that can be utilized through rehabilitation (Foster, 2006). Rehabilitation programs contri thoe an effect on prisoners, prisons, and society in general in different ways. Prison inmates who have these types of programs available it gives them something constructive to do with their time when you are incarcerated believe it or not but all you have is time to kill. These types of rehabilitation programs can have a positive impact on the inmates lives and in turn on society. If an inmate can complete rehabilitation program while incarcerated and change their demeanorstyle when released it benefits not only the inmate but also helps society. These programs can help offenders by building their self worth so that they can believe they deserve better than a prison life and let them know that there is so mething more out there other than the prison life. Some say that these types of programs dont work and in some cases they dont but in some theydo work and can give an inmate a real chance to survive outdoors of the prison walls without reverting back to their criminal ways. The major problem that I see with the rehabilitation programs would be the fact that they are being cut and facilities that offer these programs are being closed. I have a very close family friend that is mandated to go through rehabilitation program from the courts yet they are direct to a facility where the rehabilitation program is not even offered due to budget cuts. The budget cuts and closing of facilities are only going to add to the all over crowding population of inmates within the corrections facilities. So my recommendation is that these types of programs need to be offered at every prison and should but be affected by budget cuts.ReferenceFoster, B. (2006). Corrections The fundamentals. Sexual Harassment Case Study

Individual Case Study 1 1. Is thither a case of sexual agony in this bureau or is it save fun? This is a case of sexual agony because the words and actions of fellow employees ultimately made Rosetta quit her job. The technical definition of agony is when members of an organization apportion an employee in a different manner due to that persons sex, race, religion, age, and etc. agony also includes unwelcomed remarks or jokes which make the employee happen uncomfortable. These guys that Rosetta had been working with, as she menti superstard were devising remarks and intercommunicate uncomfortable questions regarding her personal relationships (asking about her boyfriend, asking intimate details and asking if she prefers Canadian men over Italian men), the guys made contaminating jokes and purposely made sure that Rosetta heard them, which is another sign of harassment its causes Rosetta to smelling awkward and embarrassed at her workplace (somewhere where she should feel comfortable and safe). Not and, do these guys make dirty jokes, but the manager, Al also contributes and encourages these guys regardless if its making another employee uncomfortable. These guys make fun of Rosetta when she comes into work, with remarks like c atomic number 18er her Risotto which in Italian means rice with gravy, not only is this an unwelcomed remark, its taunting her and insulting towards her Italian culture. Another sorting is harassment is displaying is offensive or pornographic items in a workplace surroundings.According to Rosetta, these guys post centrefolds pinned on their machines, which are pictures of nude or almost nude women. This is highly inappropriate for the work purlieu and makes Rosetta uncomfortable. When Rosetta asked these men from refraining to asking awkward and inappropriate questions and to leave her alone, they said that Italians are just braggarts which is derogatory and condescending term against her race. Sexual harassment a form of harassment, was also hand in this situation.Sexual harassment has three different characteristics the first one being that the encounters moldiness be unwelcomed to the complainant, expressly or implicitly cognize by the responder to be unwelcomed. This applies to this situation because Rosetta let the guys knows that she did not like the remarks by sayings leave me alone and mind your own business and they still slide by to make remarks which leads to the irregular characteristic conduct must continue despite the complainant protests, finally the third characteristic is complainants cooperation must be due to booking related threats.Rosetta suffered and took the harassment for so long from the fear of the manager, and being fired from her job. 2. If you were Eva, what would-and could-you do? What are the options? What is the probability of success of each option? Rosetta faced mediate systematic discrimination, which indicates that there is no intention to discriminate, bu t the system, arrangements, or policies allow it to happen. To begin with, Eva could have talked to the Manager, which she had and it didnt lead her to positive results. So, she could either go higher up the manager or go directly to the Human Resource department of that comp any. This is a long process, which has many steps so Eva could choose to go to the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The Canadian Human Rights Act is a federal law that permits discrimination anything under federal jurisdiction, for object lesson banks, airlines, government agencies, radio and TV companies. Areas that are not cover but the federal jurisdiction are covered by the provincial human rights act.The Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) is there to bring off and implement any action under the Canadian Human Rights Act. Any person/group that has reasonable ground to believe that they have been discriminated against has the right to single file with CHRC. For Eva to report harassment has taken pl ace against Rosetta, she must first take permission from Rosetta, otherwise there is a chance that her complaint could be rejected. However, there are many things that Rosetta has to be careful with, the CHRC does not accept complaints that are over a year old, if the complaint seems trivial or made in bad faith.Eva must report this problem immediately with the correct proof so her complaint wouldnt be dismissed. After Eva has filed the complaint, it allow for be only investigated. It will either be ruled as substantiated or non-substantiation, if ruled substantiated, (in support of complainant) and then an attempt to make a closing will be made. If no settlement is made, then the Human Rights Tribunal Panel can be appointed to further investigate the complaint. If they find that there was discrimination against Rosetta, then she will be compensated as seen appropriate.Eva can also file a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights laws and commission, which will investigate the com plaint (also with the consent of Rosetta) and a settlement will be offered to satisfy both parties if no settlement is reached, then complaint will be further investigated. Both these processes are really long, but proved in favour of the complaint many times. However, there are times where there is no discrimination/harassment found in the case.Another thing Eva could do is try to implement the use equity program within the organization. This program (usually run by employers) is used to undo past employment discrimination and frustrate afterlife discrimination and create equal employment opportunity within the company. Eva, with the help of the HR department could use this program and the example of Rosetta to prevent future situations like this by educating the employees about the laws, and diversity. It can also help undo the harassment that Rosetta faced. . What are Als responsibilities in this warrant? Did he fetch them out well? Why or why not? Employers, or managers h ave one basic responsibility towards their employees, which is to provide a safe environment for their employees and Al, as the manager failed to do so. The job of managers/supervisors is to know the law and to implement it within their organization/ squad. His responsibility is to be aware of what harassment is, different types of harassments and the signs of annoy workers. His responsibility as a manager was to put a stop to the harassment and discrimination Rosetta was facing, and report those employees to the Human Resources Department or to the CHRC. Not only did he fail to put a stop to the harassment, he failed to report it and was also part taking in the harassment by encouraging the jokes those guys were making that made Rosetta feel uncomfortable. Another responsibility of a manager is to have trade good communication not only within the team members but good employee-to-manager communication which is failed to establish with Rosetta. She did not feel comfortable talking t o her manager about the harassment, which ultimately made her quit her job because she felt she had no one to talk to and ask for help. Al, also fails to recognize the harassment happening and blames it on Rosetta not being able to take the jokes lightly and took the mission of Rosetta being molest very lightly. He did not carry his responsibilities out well for the reasons stated above, he created an unsafe, uncomfortable environment for one of his employees.Sexual Harassment Case StudyIndividual Case Study 1 1. Is there a case of sexual harassment in this situation or is it only fun? This is a case of sexual harassment because the words and actions of fellow employees ultimately made Rosetta quit her job. This applies to this situation because Rosetta let the guys knows that she did not like the remarks by sayings leave me alone and mind your own business and they still continue to make remarks which leads to the second characteristic conduct must continue despite the complainant protests, finally the third characteristic is complainants cooperation must be due to employment related threats.Rosetta suffered and took the harassment for so long from the fear of the manager, and being fired from her job. 2. If you were Eva, what would-and could-you do? What are the options? What is the probability of success of each option? Rosetta faced indirect systematic discrimination, which indicates that there is no intention to discriminate, but the system, arrangements, or policies allow it to happen. To begin with, Eva could have talked to the Manager, which she had and it didnt lead her to positive results. So, she could either go above the manager or go directly to the Human Resource department of that company. This is a long process, which has many steps so Eva could choose to go to the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The Canadian Human Rights Act is a federal law that permits discrimination anything under federal jurisdiction, for example banks, airlines, government agencies, radio an d TV companies. Areas that are not covered but the federal jurisdiction are covered by the provincial human rights act.The Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) is there to supervise and implement any action under the Canadian Human Rights Act. Any person/group that has reasonable ground to believe that they have been discriminated against has the right to file with CHRC. For Eva to report harassment has taken place against Rosetta, she must first take permission from Rosetta, otherwise there is a chance that her complaint could be rejected. However, there are many things that Rosetta has to be careful with, the CHRC does not accept complaints that are over a year old, if the complaint seems trivial or made in bad faith.Eva must report this problem immediately with the correct proof so her complaint wouldnt be dismissed. After Eva has filed the complaint, it will be further investigated. It will either be ruled as substantiated or non-substantiation, if ruled substantiated, (in su pport of complainant) then an attempt to make a settlement will be made. If no settlement is made, then the Human Rights Tribunal Panel can be appointed to further investigate the complaint. If they find that there was discrimination against Rosetta, then she will be compensated as seen appropriate.Eva can also file a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights laws and commission, which will investigate the complaint (also with the consent of Rosetta) and a settlement will be offered to satisfy both parties if no settlement is reached, then complaint will be further investigated. Both these processes are very long, but proven in favour of the complaint many times. However, there are times where there is no discrimination/harassment found in the case.Another thing Eva could do is try to implement the employment equity program within the organization. This program (usually run by employers) is used to undo past employment discrimination and prevent future discrimination and create equal employment opportunity within the company. Eva, with the help of the HR department could use this program and the example of Rosetta to prevent future situations like this by educating the employees about the laws, and diversity. It can also help undo the harassment that Rosetta faced. . What are Als responsibilities in this instance? Did he carry them out well? Why or why not? Employers, or managers have one basic responsibility towards their employees, which is to provide a safe environment for their employees and Al, as the manager failed to do so. The job of managers/supervisors is to know the law and to implement it within their organization/team. His responsibility is to be aware of what harassment is, different types of harassments and the signs of harassed workers. Another responsibility of a manager is to have good communication not only within the team members but good employee-to-manager communication which is failed to establish with Rosetta. She did not feel comfortable talking to her manager about the harassment, which ultimately made her quit her job because she felt she had no one to talk to and ask for help. Al, also fails to recognize the harassment happening and blames it on Rosetta not being able to take the jokes lightly and took the accusation of Rosetta being harassed very lightly. He did not carry his responsibilities out well for the reasons stated above, he created an unsafe, uncomfortable environment for one of his employees.

Are leaders born or made ? Essay

There is no doubt that leading develop their leadership skills through breeding larn experiences, training, coaching, mentoring and hardworking. Some people believe that leaders atomic number 18 born naturally intelligent, visionary, charismatic and able to articulate a plan and rally their teams around it. Yet there are others who says that leaders are both born and made naturally intelligent and extroverted people, enhanced with education, training and experience. We often hear the proverb Born to lead, but it does non mean that leaders are born only but not made, because to be a leader you must first be a follower, adjust leaders do not walk in the front, they simply follow the rest. Nature may have some influence on who a individual becomes. It is the upbringing of a person which either makes him leader or a follower. I think leaders are born as well as are made, because one may have the ability to lead but not the experience and skills to be a leader and skills develop thr ough the life learning experiences. We have many examples of born leaders as well as made leaders.Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Martin Luther King were few of the leaders who make their way to be a leader through their dedication, hard work, experience, intelligence, qualities and skills. Then, there are some born leaders like Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H), Jesus, and Prophet Noah are few chosen leaders who lead people of their generation as well as still leading the generations of today. I think it all depends how one perceive rough a leader, for me it does not matter that leader are made or born, what matters the most is how leaders develop their skills through their experiences and leadership is a lifetime learning activity. You are never done because there is always more to learn. There are always skills you need to improve.

Environmental Degradation – Air Pollution

The environmental degradation is the deterioration of environment through depletion of resources, such as soil, water and behavior. When natural habitats destroyed or natural resources depleted, the environment atomic number 18 degraded. Heres, one example of air pollution which lead to environment degraded in London. London in SE England had the reputation of one of the most begrime cities in Europe in the 1950s.Air pollution had reached such a serious stage that it caused the London Smog in 1952 that caused 4000 deaths and a host of otherwise related ailments among the Londoners. One of the main causes of the serious air pollution was the burning of fossil furnishs by the many manufacturing industries producing iron and steel, automobiles, machinery, textiles and food. Coal and Oil were the main sources of fuel for the factories which resulted in the release of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, smoke, soot and other particulates.Inefficient machinery and obsolete techniques cou pled with the improper monitoring worsened the air pollution. the severe air pollution was causing acid rain, smog and health problems. London being the capital city has a very population density and a declamatory volume to transport vehicles such as aircrafts landing and taking off at the Heathrow airport, lorries and buses on the streets, steamships and boats along the Themes River and private cars all which were burning up coal, gas pedal and diesel in large quantities. This led to additional pollutants such as carbon monoxide, lead and carbon being released into the air. Fossil fuel combustion was besides prevalent in the domestic households. Even fuel wood was burned to provide heating for homes. Inefficient combustion techniques and building construction led to neither burning and excessive release of air pollutants such as gases, smokes and particulates. Thermal electricity generation using fossil fuels further contributed to the worsening of the air tonus. n addition, ig norance on the part of individuals and the authorities as regards the burning of garbage, accidental fires and burning of forests aggravated the air pollution. The lack of proper monitoring, legislation and implementation of environmental quality laws did little to alleviate the situation, thus leading to serious degradation of air quality with its heavy toll on human life, livestock, fish and vegetation.

“Devil in a Blue Dress” By Walter Mosley Essay

When will it end? Racial stereotypes need been around since the 19th century and its presence is the United States is slake felt this ideology has been portrayed in all types of mediums where semiotics influence a individuals thought process. The influence of racial stereotyping has molded how a person judges an opposite person by the basis of their race. Walter Mosley, the author of Devil in a Blue Dress, takes advantage of existing racial stereotypes to communicate his readers of the enormous issue still facing society today. Mosley has incorporated the issues of ethnic discrimination noticed in media and advertisements in Western Culture while heap advertisements from the media has led the battle for racial stereotyping.A common stereotype portrays all African-Americans to speak ghetto also known as Ebonics. The Hip-Hop and media industry be both of the main mediums that has erectively influenced popular culture. M.T.V (Music Television) liberally broadcasts programs to it s viewers African Americans bulk speaking words such as yall and nah soused are just the tip of the iceberg for this tongue of English. The effect of portraying all opprobrious people in television talking ghetto significantly demeans their doubling of knowledge and their ability to communicate proficiently with society. If sensation just watched M.T.V all of their life, he or she they would assume all African-Americans people speak another dialect of English. The effect of the Ebonic stereotype has carried over into English literature.Walter Mosley incorporates the stereotype of African-Americans speaking Ebonics to give his readers a sense of why black people talk in ghetto. Easy, one of the main characters in Devil in a Blue Dress, states I always tried to speak proper English in my life, the kind of English they taught in school, but I found over the years that I could only truly transport myself in the natural, uneducated dialect of my upbringing. The significance of th is handing over demonstrates black people who use Ebonics know how to speak proper English but they choose not to because they ultimately decide to speak in Ebonics to express their ideas more accurately. It is human nature for one to do an action or develop a habit that makes them feel comfortable. Although people are misled to think that black people are not literate enough to speak proper English maybe they just do not want to. However, Black people havent only been the target of racial stereotyping.White people have been portrayed by media, advertisements, and magazines to be rich and happy. For example, a Caucasian person is usually featured on the indemnify of Forbes magazine. To be featured on the cover of the business magazine one must be successful and witty in their business endeavors. There are people from every race that have been successful in the business world, but it is flannel people who are represented the most. How come Forbes magazine do not like to feature o ther ethnicities more often or why not add Ebonics to the cover of the magazine? Television ads such as the Cingular commercial boasting their national coverage depicts two white male business partners communicating with each other from far distances. These usages of media to convey racial stereotyping are effective. The mass stereotyping in the media has caused society to develop messages of white people being the supreme being and the most level-headed opposed to African Americans who are portrayed to be illiterate and unable to speak English properly. The history mingled with white and black people has created a grudge filled with pain and guilt that kept both of them intolerable of each others values. A large void characterized by the compliment and ego of both races has made it difficult for society to integrate a healthy race between the two ethnicthicies. According to Demoit, solving the problem of their relationship would mean we as an individual would have to scrub off t he dirt of ill will. Although the media can depict the two ethnicities living happy ever after, the determination of reaching a agreement between the two races will be very difficult For instance, the explicit show Southpark features only one African American child among a Caucasian dominated population. Token, the name of the child, suggests that he is the token black friend among his group of white friends. Therefore, television is emanating wide void between black and white relationships.Mosley incorporates the stereotyping of the supreme white male in Devil in A Blue Dress. Dewitt Albright, a rich businessman, symbolizes as the epitome of the successful white male who has many connections that the ordinary person would not have. From the beginning to the end of the novel Mosley explicitly describes Albright to be well dressed in a white suitcomplemented with white silk socks. One of the passages in the novel after an unknown person knocks out Easy has a concerned Primo toilsom e to figure out the situation.Primo states, What happened, Amigo? You have a fight with your friends? a delusional Easy asks What friends? Primo replies Joppy and the white man in the white suit. The white man in the white suit Primo describes is Dewitt Albright. The significance of Dewitt Albright wearing this white suit throughout the entire novel creates an image of an individual emit success from his body. Albright, one of the more notable characters in the novel, is not the only white character in the novel Mosley explicitly describes all the white characters in the novel to wear fashionable clothing while the black characters appearance depict a less affluent individual. The psychological effect of mass advertisements has helped develop racial stereotypes. Mass consumerism has given rise to mass advertisements, which has the power to influence large portions of society (Twitchell 204). Since large portions of the populations in the United States have televisions in their house hold society is constantly fed information from the media. The images of sex, alcohol, and racism have a profound effect on society that is non-promiscuous to its viewers.Works CitedDemott, Benajamin. impersonate on a Happy Face Masking the Differences Between Blacks and Whites. Ethical Theory, Utilitarianism and Kant’s Theory Essay

Ethics is a branch of philosophy which has a central concern of determining of how concourse should live their lives in agreement of distinguishing the indemnify dissembleions from wrong actions (Boatright, 2007, p. 7). In ethics normative theory rede different principles on how society can deal with this dilemma and that is through the introduction of deontological and theological estimable system. Deontological ethics or non-consequentialist theory requires state to do the right subject simply beca procedure it is the right thing to do regardless of its forces (Barry, Sansburry, & Shaw, 2009, p. 1).On the contrary, teleological or consequentialist approach sees action to be morally right or wrong due to its producing type of consequences like pleasure, welf atomic number 18, knowledge, or gladness (Barry, et. al. , 2009, p. 61). Different approach on deontological and teleological ethics was introduced in explaining the different views of philosophers in accordance of dec ision making or adjudicate our daily problems. Firstly is Immanuel Kant, the famous deontologist introduced relationship between duty and the morality of human actions. He verbalize that an action can be hireed moral if and only if it is in relation to our good leave alone which is in accordance with the moral law instead of just basing it on our natural inclination (Boatright, 2007, p. 66). He stipulate that doing things ground on our feelings or self-interest even though it might look like we are doing our duty it has still no moral worth. He indeed stated that we should relate our subjective picking on moral law which explained that in every intention on our acts should include maxim which is use by Kants to launch the standard of morality or the categorical imperative (Barry, et. al. , 2009, p. 72).He proposed that found on this maxim spate can only act if this action can be run short a universal law or which can possibly accepted by the majority. In admission to this , action should always be in respect on other people, that we should never treat others as merely means to our end or to use others for the attainment of our own interest. On the other hand, Jeremy Bentham, peerless of the first to develop the utilitarian theory, a form of teleological ethics approach the issue by always relating our actions to the moral doctrine which stated that the morality of our action can be weight to its consequences, that if it effects o the greatest good for the human welfare the action is right, if not then it is wrong (Barry, et. al. , 2009, p. 72).He then added that a moral prescription of utilitarianism requires that consequences should not only be back awayn in regard of an eccentric but also in respect of the common good. Added to the consequentialist theory is egoism, which equates morality to the attainment of an man-to-mans long term interest (Barry, et. al. , 2009, p. 59).As stated in Kants theory, maxim should always take into floor other people which are a total rival to egoism in which the foot of moral act is self-interest. other proponent of deontological approach was the British scholar W. D. Ross, a well-known contrary of utilitarianism. Ross speech patterned other non-consequentialist perspective emphasizing our duty of care to those who depend on us (Barry, et. al. , 2009, p. 72). unalike utilitarianism we cannot have single obligation to maximise happiness for our obligations which develop out of different relationship or our different roles to others. For an instance, our duties as a mom to our children, sister to our siblings and a friend to colleagues vary on distributively. Another deontological approach by Ross and other contemporary philosophers explained that our moral obligation is our prima facie (Barry, et. al. , 2009, p. 73). In relation to utilitarianisms ratio of good consequences over its bad outcome prima facie explains that one of our obligations can be overridden by a more important obl igation that in reality there will come a time that we need to choose from which of our moral duties must outweigh. But then again, unlike utilitarianism, prima facie pull in a genuine obligation that the reason behind this decision is because of the inherit act itself, like shift our promise to attend to a friends party over bringing someone wound to the hospital. Although, we can see that deontological theory is somehow totally contradicting to teleological theory we should still put into account that some(prenominal) views what makes right acts right. As stated earlier, utilitarianism presents moral action based on the greatest happiness for the greatest people. Utilitarians hardly believe that the principle of utility(prenominal) should be the one universal moral code. tenet of utility describes as the greatest happiness principle, that whenever people need to make a choice they should consider the one that can maximise their happiness and minimise their unhappiness for the benefit of the greatest number of people (Boatright, 2007, p. 33).Within the scope of the theory of utilitarianism is the existence of its two subdivisions namely the act of utilitarianism and the incur of utilitarianism which is somehow coincides with distributively other but in a way see the said theory in a different point of view. Both act and normal utilitarianism agree that an ethical decisions should merely be based on its consequences, that any chosen decision which minimizes the utility is morally wrong and whatever will result in maximising utility is considered to be morally right (Boatright, 2007, p. 2). In addition to this, both views that an individual must aim to act in regards to maximising the happiness of the group as a whole, not just on acting based on their intention to maximise their self-interest (Boatright, 2007, p. 33 ). However, in regards to the assessment of maximising the greatest happiness of the people conflicts arises between the said subdivisions of utilitarianism.Act of utilitarianism is said to be more straight forwards who entails that always do whatever act that will create the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people (Boatright, 2007, p. 36 ). Jeremy Bentham believed that the only criteria for an action to be moral if it will result to the maximisation of utility. He based his moral theory in accordance with hedonism, that whatever is pleasant for human is good and whatever is painful is bad thus, he insisted that pleasure and happiness is the ultimate intimate value or our act.Bentham introduced the hedonistic calculus which can serve as an individuals egest to act based on the maximisation of utility. This calculation states that individual must rate in accordance to seven proposed consequences intensity, duration, certain or uncertainty, remoteness, fecundity, purity, and extent. Once the individual equates all the said pleasures and pains on each side, he can then decide to which action result to more pleasure for the common people involve. This approach of Bentham received negative feedback from other utilitarians because of lack in providing overall happiness in the future. otherwise utilitarians specified that hedonistic calculus is unclear of how long and individual must wait to whether their actions is right or wrong. The inconsistency that was observed in Benthams hedonistic approach gave rise to the formulation of rule-utilitarianism. This approach gave emphasis on the relationship of act and the context in which the act occurs. It considers more than just a singular situation by taking into account various types of situation and the respective right actions which both should be based in a set up rules to maximize utility. This set up rule is grounded by trauma principle which states that rightful actions should prevent harming people. Another basis of the said rule is the golden rule which states that individual should not do something which he cannot be accepted by ever ybody and standard of judging should not only be based on single happiness, but the greatest amount of happiness in total(Boatright, 2007, p. 8). Compare to act utilitarianism, rule utilitarianism is said to provide stronger foundation for the accomplishment of ethical decisions for it satisfied both present actions and present situation, but also considered present actions and future situations. On the other way around, rule utilitarianism and Kants theory which we just mentioned earlier can present the often confusion that people confront in reality of which of the said approach will bring the most moral act. Both of them set some standards in which we can base our actions to determine its morality. Kants theory proposed that our actions can only be seen as morally right if it is relation to our good will which is in accordance to the moral law. In here, Kants stated that our every intention should include maxim which can be either an act than can be accepted universally or a deed that will take into consideration the respect for other people which generally explained by the golden rule.Same with rule utilitarianism, Bentham introduced the set up rules as standard of moral act which is also grounded by the golden rule and the principle of harm which in a way is relative to the universal acceptance, that harming people in our actions just for maximising our utility cannot be accepted by society. In contrast, Kants insisted that moral obligation has nothing to do with the consequence in which rule utilitarianism is promoting. Our actions to be moral should just arise from a moral law that is salad dressing on all rational beings.

The villages at Port Sunlight consisted of tremendous blocks of housing of low concentration and a number of public buildings such as gymnasiums, theatres and libraries that were surrounded by gardens and open green spaces. The village layout was designed in such a bearing that it restricted any open view of the factory and of the inside. The houses were so uniquely built that their backs could not be visible. The factory wa s purposely built a one storey structure. This was primarily to provide aeration, enough light and a healthier environment for the workers and also to reduce its corporal impact on the village. In Letchworth, the bit was rather different. The planning was more impressive than that of Port Sunlight. For many years the development of the town was controlled by this company. The streets were made beautiful with trees and beds of roses along them. at that place were a number of factories, unlike in Port Sunlight where factories grew much later. Therefore, in the planning the factories had to be placed in the correct relation to one another. The factories were placed into estates called industrial estates. Currently it is a rattling common idea but back then it was a world-shattering idea. But at the identical time it was not easy for the town to attract other industries. This was because, the public buildings that had been put in the plan to surface around the town, did not really materialize for a long time. For this reason the growth of the town was retarded. How could the swagman be so blithesome More interestingly, how could the homeless, hungry and tired swagman be so jolly If he was so jolly, why would he want to drown himselfWhile analyzing the questions popping in his head, he recalls a time by the Combo Waterhole when the folk story of the Waltzing Matilda was discussed by him and his friend. He remembered conferring to his friend that the story needed to be rightfully Australian. Hence, it should be originally written with Aboriginal words. A social reading is the act of evaluating a particular work of literature, in the context of its impact to the society. In the time when most people love Waltzing Matilda as a mere folk story, it is indeed considered a social reading to evaluate the relevance of the story of its factual roots and historical bases. According to the text, the characters beware was in turmoil as his mind was debating what to accept in Waltzing Matilda. Which of the text is fact and which is fiction How can the story be merely mythic How can it be real What was the real reason why the jolly swagman died Did he vow suicide This questions arising in his mind already qualifies as significant bases for Knughy to suffer social reading.Essentially, Knughy was able to conduct a social reading by recalling images of the past, which could be strong determinants of facts and myths. Analysis of Media Coverage of the Summers Controversy Essay

Analysis of Media Coverage of the Summers Controversy - Essay ExampleSummers emphasized that this evidential difference surrounded by men and women in sciences could non be overlooked. The media blew Summers remarks out of proportion in the ensuing controversy, reporting that the academic was a chauvinist, who upheld the notion that women are naturally inferior to men. In my opinion, the media framed and perpetuated the controversy, missing out on the fact that he was hypothesizing on the significant gap between men and women while trying to put forward further research into the issue. Summers was wrong to state that women are inherently inferior to men since he did not have any scientific evidence to prove this further, his tendency to understate the role of gender and acculturation in the same, lowers the credibility of his hypotheses. Summers controversial remarks were first published in the Boston Globe newspaper. The paper principally focused on the Harvard presidents secon d suggestion on the potential cause for few female representatives in sciences. This statement quoted Summers stating that males attain higher test scores in science and math than females. He continued to say that although nobody could explain this occurrence, studies in behavioral genetics shows that aspects usually attributed to learn or socialization could actually be based on biology. The Boston Globe reported that convention participants said that in making this point, Larry Summers was implying that women do not possess the same scientific and mathematical great power as men.

Although speaking of architectural elements, Brett Ketters definition of the Victorian Gothic is equally applicable to this piece The characteristic feature of Victorian Gothic is its polychromy, in which materials of different colors and textures are used to create decorative bands different materials are used as well (2001). In its use of several varieties of metals and glassware to present differing colors and textures as well as the use of gemstones and other materials to provide decorative elements, this decanter certainly typifies this definition sufficiently to reflect this culture. Further, the illustrative details of the piece, including the Greek and Roman coins and Roman font-style used in the engraving throughout the piece denote the deep connection to Englands past.
